Mobile World Congress remains one of Barcelona’s largest annual business events, bringing tens of thousands of technology executives, exhibitors, investors, policymakers and other visitors into the city for a concentrated week of commercial activity.

The 2026 edition generated an estimated €588 million in economic contribution to Barcelona, according to an economic impact report prepared for the GSMA, which organizes the event. That was up from €561 million in 2025, an increase of about 4.8%.

The figure represents an economic impact estimate rather than €588 million of direct spending. GSMA says its assessment incorporates direct, indirect and induced contributions associated with the congress, including visitor spending, employment and additional government revenue.

MWC 2026 was held from March 2 through March 5 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. Nearly 105,000 people from 207 countries and territories attended, according to GSMA.

The event also brought together 2,900 exhibitors, partners and sponsors, more than 1,700 speakers and nearly 2,600 journalists and industry analysts. About 17% of attendees were C-suite executives, while 45% were at director level or above.

Attendance was below the 109,000 recorded in 2025, yet the estimated economic contribution increased. That distinction is important because GSMA’s impact measure is not calculated from attendance alone. It is designed to capture the wider economic activity associated with staging and attending the event.

The congress creates demand well beyond the exhibition halls. Visitors require accommodation, food, transportation, meeting spaces and other services, spreading spending across Barcelona and surrounding municipalities.

Data from the Barcelona Provincial Council’s tourism laboratory showed particularly strong hotel demand in areas surrounding the city during the congress. Hotel occupancy reached 82.5% in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, where the Gran Via venue is located, while Castelldefels reached 82.1% and Sabadell 87.3%.

Baix Llobregat recorded 35,329 hotel overnight stays, up 14.9% from the previous edition. Castelldefels and Sitges recorded increases in overnight stays of 27.6% and 23.9%, respectively. The data shows how demand created by MWC extends into the wider Barcelona metropolitan area rather than remaining concentrated in the city center.

Barcelona’s broader tourism figures for March were also strong, although they cannot be attributed solely to MWC because Easter and other travel activity affected the month. Hotels and guesthouses in Barcelona city recorded a 64.4% bed occupancy rate, up 1.4 percentage points from March 2025. Professional travel accounted for just over half of surveyed tourist trips during the month.

The 2026 economic assessment estimated that MWC created 14,016 part-time jobs, compared with about 13,000 in 2025.

These figures should not be interpreted as 14,016 permanent new positions. GSMA specifically describes them as part-time jobs associated with the event, reflecting the temporary staffing requirements created by a large international congress.

Those requirements span areas such as event operations, hospitality, transportation, security, catering and other services needed to accommodate an event of MWC’s scale.

GSMA calculates MWC’s economic contribution using an independent post-event assessment based on observed event data. The analysis applies the IDESCAT input-output framework for Catalonia and incorporates direct, indirect and induced economic effects.

This means the €588 million figure is broader than spending by congress attendees alone. Direct activity can generate additional demand for suppliers and workers, which then produces further activity elsewhere in the economy.

Because the figure comes from an economic impact model commissioned by the event organizer, it should be understood as an estimate produced according to that methodology rather than a direct measurement of every euro spent in Barcelona.

The 2026 gathering marked 20 years of MWC in Barcelona. GSMA estimates that the congress has generated a cumulative €7.5 billion in economic contribution since arriving in the city in 2006, while supporting 187,000 part-time jobs across those editions.

Annual economic impact has continued to rise in recent years. MWC generated an estimated €502 million in 2024, €561 million in 2025 and €588 million in 2026.

For Barcelona, that makes Mobile World Congress more than a four-day technology exhibition. Its measurable impact extends into hotels, restaurants, transportation, employment and suppliers across the metropolitan economy, turning one of the technology industry’s largest gatherings into a major annual economic event for the city.
