Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivered a near-record debut at the North American box office, with Sony Pictures estimating that the superhero film generated $355 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales from July 31 through August 2, 2026.
The figure is a Sunday studio estimate rather than a finalized weekend total. Final domestic numbers were expected on Monday, and Box Office Mojo continued to label the weekend results as estimated at the time of publication. The film opened in 4,487 North American theaters, producing an estimated per-theater average of approximately $79,117.
A Near-Record North American Opening
If confirmed, the $355 million result would place Brand New Day second among the highest-grossing North American opening weekends in history, based on nominal ticket sales.
The film’s estimated opening was only about $2.1 million below the finalized $357.1 million debut of Avengers: Endgame in April 2019. Because the difference is less than 1%, the historical ranking could change when Sony releases the final weekend figures.
The new film also substantially exceeded the previous Spider-Man opening record. Spider-Man: No Way Home debuted with $260.1 million in December 2021, meaning Brand New Day’s estimated opening was approximately $94.9 million, or 36%, higher. The ranking does not account for inflation or changes in average ticket prices.
The performance also represents the largest North American opening in Sony Pictures’ history, according to the Associated Press.
International Sales Lift the Global Total
The film’s reach extended well beyond North America. Sony estimated that Brand New Day earned $572 million from international markets, including $121 million from China. Combined with its North American result, that produced an estimated $927 million worldwide opening.
That would rank as the second-largest worldwide debut on record, behind the roughly $1.2 billion global launch of Avengers: Endgame. International screenings began in several markets on July 29, two days before the film’s wide North American release.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day is the fourth standalone Spider-Man film led by Tom Holland. Its cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo. The production brings together Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Strong Demand Among Younger Moviegoers
Exit-poll data suggests younger audiences played an important role in the opening. PostTrak estimated that slightly more than half of ticket buyers were under 25, while people aged 18 to 24 accounted for 36% of the audience. Approximately 61% of attendees were male.
EntTelligence estimated that around 24.1 million people saw the film in North American theaters during the weekend. Audience response was also positive, with the movie receiving an “A” CinemaScore and a five-star PostTrak rating. These indicators could support continued demand, although opening-weekend enthusiasm does not guarantee strong performance in later weeks.
The debut demonstrates the continuing commercial strength of the Spider-Man franchise. However, the success of one major release does not necessarily establish a broad recovery across all superhero films. Recent performance within the genre has varied considerably by title, character and audience reception.
A Record Weekend for North American Theaters
Brand New Day also helped produce a record weekend for the wider theatrical market. Rentrak estimated that all films in North American cinemas generated approximately $430 million from July 31 through August 2.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also features Holland and Zendaya, placed second with an estimated $51 million in its third weekend. The combination of two major event films helped theaters surpass the previous market-wide weekend record established during the opening of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The result arrives as the theatrical business continues to rebuild. As of August 2, North American box-office receipts for 2026 were 10% higher than during the comparable period of 2025 but remained 16% below 2019 levels, according to Rentrak data reported by Reuters.
The Opening Is Not the Same as Profit
Despite the exceptional headline figure, box-office gross should not be treated as studio revenue or profit. Theater operators retain part of ticket sales, while production, distribution and marketing costs must also be recovered. The film reportedly cost approximately $225 million to produce, excluding marketing expenses.
Its long-term commercial outcome will depend on subsequent theatrical demand, the division of international ticket revenue and later income from home entertainment, licensing and streaming.
Final weekend figures will determine whether Brand New Day remains in second place or overtakes Avengers: Endgame. Regardless of that revision, its estimated $355 million debut already places it among the largest theatrical launches ever recorded.
